Foster

Would you be willing to open your home to kittens that need a little TLC before they can go to their forever home? Click here to see if being a volunteer foster is an option for you!

Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster home! Kittens are easiest to tame when caught before 12 weeks old, but even then there are still those that need a little bit more attention to come out of their shell before going up for adoption. There also may be instances when kittens are orphaned or abandoned at a young age and require bottle feeding. There are other cases where a kitten may do well in a foster home instead of the shelter environment.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture has certain legal guidelines that must be met to be approved for fostering.

Foster home approval requirements:

  • In-home animal population limit.  A foster home cannot have more than six animals, including pets owned by the foster home, with the exception of a litter of puppies or kittens under 16 weeks of age. A litter of puppies or kittens under 16 weeks of age is considered the equivalent of one dog or cat. A foster home cannot have more than two litters of puppies or kittens under 16 weeks of age at any given time.
  • Yearly home inspection.  Foster homes must be inspected by the foster oversight organization (HamCoCats) at least once each year. Documentation of the inspection must be maintained in each foster home’s records.
